France TV to broadcast Grand Theft Auto documentary
France Télévision and Galatée Films have produced a 52-minute documentary titled ‘GTA, le jeu no limit’ exploring the history and cultural impact of the Grand Theft Auto franchise. The film traces the series from its 1997 origins to its status as a global pop culture icon, ahead of the anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto VI.
The documentary features interviews with industry pioneers, including Jamie King, co-founder of Rockstar Games, and early creators from the Scottish studio DMA Design, such as Keith Hamilton, Paul Farley, and Gary Penn. It examines the franchise’s evolution from a controversial title to a significant artistic medium that parodies consumerist culture.
In addition to its historical overview, the film addresses various controversies associated with the series, including the ‘hot coffee’ incident and depictions of police. The documentary premiered on October 23 on France.tv and the France TV / Slash YouTube channel, with a television broadcast scheduled for November 12 on France 4.
