France: Unrest and arrests follow widespread riots and protests
Following a series of violent riots and looting events in France, professional organizations and authorities are responding to the aftermath. Business owners have reported feeling abandoned by police during recent disturbances, with some facing injuries or property damage while attempting to protect their establishments. In response to the damage, the insurance federation France Assureurs has committed to extending the claim declaration period to 30 days, accelerating indemnification processes, and facilitating advance payments for those in critical situations.
In Le Mans, authorities reported that 29 individuals, including 11 minors, were arrested following violence during demonstrations on October 24, 2026. Prosecutor Carine Halley stated that the arrests involve suspicions of participating in organized groups to commit violence or degradation, as well as violence against public officials. Three individuals, consisting of two minors and one adult, are scheduled to face trial.
Further demonstrations have been announced for late October and early November, leading several prefects to ban certain gatherings to maintain public order.
