Palestinian Authority postpones elections to September 2027

President Mahmoud Abbas has issued a decree postponing Palestinian legislative and presidential elections. The legislative elections, originally set for November 28, 2026, have been rescheduled to September 11, 2027, to coincide with the presidential vote.

The Palestinian Presidency cited Israeli occupation-imposed obstacles, such as restrictions on movement and the inability to hold free and inclusive elections in Jerusalem or Gaza, as the primary reasons for the delay. Hussein al-Sheikh stated that the Palestinian Authority is prepared to move the election date forward if suitable conditions are met.

The decision has drawn international scrutiny. France has called on the Palestinian Authority to maintain the original election schedule. Meanwhile, some observers suggest the postponement exacerbates a crisis of political legitimacy for the current leadership, potentially diminishing hopes for credible political alternatives to Hamas and the Palestinian Authority.
