Europe weather shifts from record warmth to rain and flood risks

Western Europe is experiencing a significant meteorological shift following an unseasonably warm period. In France, temperatures reached over 30°C in some southwestern regions during mid-October, marking one of the warmest starts to the month on record. However, a transition is underway as Atlantic disturbances and polar air masses begin to move in.

Forecasts indicate a return of oceanic flows, bringing rain and wind to western regions like Brittany and Normandy, with potential extensions toward the Paris Basin. There is growing concern regarding a “cocktail explosif” over the Mediterranean, where warm sea temperatures combined with incoming cold air could trigger heavy rainfall and flooding risks, particularly in Spain and along the Mediterranean coast.

Looking ahead to November, models suggest a continued trend of higher-than-average temperatures and increased precipitation, with a potential 20% excess in rainfall for northern and western regions. Meanwhile, in Luxembourg, autumn conditions are settling in with cooler temperatures and overcast skies.
