France weather: extreme heat spike followed by sharp temperature drop

France is experiencing a significant thermal anomaly in mid-September, characterized by a sharp rise in temperatures followed by a sudden cooling period. A subtropical air mass is driving temperatures well above seasonal norms, with many major cities expected to exceed 30°C. In some southern regions, such as Languedoc-Roussillon, temperatures could reach as high as 36°C or 37°C.

This heatwave is expected to peak around Tuesday, September 15, before a rapid shift in weather patterns occurs on Wednesday. A maritime air mass from the Atlantic is forecasted to bring a sharp drop in temperatures, potentially falling by 10 to 15°C in some areas. This transition will likely bring more autumnal conditions, including increased cloud cover, wind, and scattered showers.

Long-term meteorological analysis suggests that if September temperatures remain more than 2°C above seasonal averages, it may indicate a milder winter ahead. While the immediate forecast shows a brief return to summer-like heat, the upcoming week will be defined by this dramatic temperature fluctuation.
