France orders online platforms to purge stolen goods following widespread looting
Following widespread looting and property damage across France, the French government has called on major online marketplaces to immediately block and remove listings of stolen luxury goods, electronics, and cosmetics. The unrest, which included attacks on high-end retailers such as Dior, Rolex, Louis Vuitton, and Hermes, has affected at least 3,000 commercial establishments, including pharmacies and restaurants.
French authorities have signed an agreement with several digital platforms—including Vinted, Amazon, eBay, Meta, TikTok, and Leboncoin—to facilitate the immediate sharing of data regarding individuals attempting to sell looted items. Platforms are now obligated to provide regular reports to the government on their enforcement actions.
Vinted France has implemented a zero-tolerance policy, increasing monitoring and account blocking for suspicious listings. While eBay reported no significant increase in such listings, the company stated it is working closely with law enforcement. Meanwhile, Polish platforms Allegro and OLX reported that they have not received any reports or identified listings related to items stolen during the unrest in France or Italy.
