A wildfire that ignited on 22 July 2024 in the Arcachon valley north of Bordeaux has burned roughly 42,000 hectares (about 420 km²), making it the largest fire in France since 1949. The blaze has injured 93 firefighters and destroyed around 240 homes.

Authorities have evacuated about 220,000 people from 23 communes in the Gironde department. An additional precautionary evacuation of 4,000 tourists from campsites and holiday villages around Lacanau was ordered as forecast temperatures of up to 35 °C and strong south‑westerly winds raise the risk of re‑ignition. Turkey has sent two firefighting aircraft to assist French crews.

The French Defence Ministry deployed roughly 1,500 military personnel and coordinated protective measures for strategic defence and aerospace facilities, including ArianeGroup, Dassault Aviation, Airbus Atlantic and Roxel. The fire remains “stabilised” but officials warn that rising heat and winds could cause new flare‑ups.
