France Wildfires Generate Rare Fire Cloud

Intense wildfires in the Gironde region near Bordeaux have produced a pyrocumulonimbus, a massive fire‑cloud rarely seen in France. NASA described the phenomenon as a “dragon that spews fire.”

The fire‑cloud forms when extreme heat, drought and strong winds lift large amounts of heat, smoke and moisture high into the atmosphere, where it cools and becomes a towering storm‑cloud. Experts warn such clouds can amplify fires, generate lightning, and fling burning embers kilometers away, making firefighting and evacuations far more hazardous.

Professor David Boeman of Tasmania University explained, “You can imagine it as a chimney: the fire is at the bottom and the smoke rises through the chimney into the atmosphere.” The event has prompted authorities to expand evacuations and deploy additional firefighting resources.
