Europe wildfires destroy 500,000 hectares across multiple countries

Europe is facing a severe summer of wildfires, with approximately 500,000 hectares destroyed across France, Spain, Portugal, Greece, and Romania. In France alone, at least 120,000 hectares have burned since the start of summer, driven by heatwaves and climate change.

In the Drôme region, a fire in the Claps massif continues to progress slowly toward the villages of Charens and Haut-Charens, prompting confinement orders for residents. Meanwhile, a fire in Lozère has been contained after burning 150 hectares. The increasing intensity of these fires is placing a massive financial burden on local municipalities, which face high daily costs for emergency services and long-term expenses for infrastructure reconstruction and water network repairs.

In Switzerland, concerns are rising regarding forest resilience. While the country has avoided major fires so far, experts warn of increasing risks. There is growing political debate over the Swiss Federal Council's decision to reduce reforestation credits, which critics argue undermines efforts to plant heat-resistant tree species.
