France winter weather trends suggest uncertain snow prospects

Early meteorological trends for the upcoming winter season in France suggest an uncertain outlook regarding snowfall for Christmas and New Year. While long-term models provide general patterns, they cannot guarantee specific snowy events at particular dates or locations.

Meteorologist Dominik Jung notes that a potentially intense El Niño event in the Pacific is creating an unprecedented configuration for the season. While previous El Niño episodes in 1997/98 and 2015/16 resulted in mild winters, the current situation is considered unique.

Météo-France has indicated that the most probable scenario for mainland France and Corsica is a quarter that is warmer than normal, with a 60% probability for this outcome. Although seasonal forecasts suggest temperatures above average for December, experts note that brief cold snaps could still allow for snow in certain areas, even if a white Christmas in the lowlands remains rare.
