Germany security agencies warn of potential violence during October 31 protests

German security authorities and politicians are on high alert ahead of nationwide demonstrations scheduled for October 31. The 'Gen Z regelt' and 'Gen Z steht auf' initiatives have called for protests in over 20 cities, including Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Frankfurt, and Cologne, to address issues such as education, living costs, and the abolition of compulsory military service.

Interior ministers in several states, including Brandenburg and Baden-Württemberg, have warned that the timing of the protests coincides with Halloween, raising concerns that individuals might use masks to conceal their identities while committing acts of violence or property damage. Security agencies are also monitoring social media for calls to arson and attacks, noting patterns of unrest seen in recent French protests.

While organizers have explicitly stated they distance themselves from all forms of violence and advocate for peaceful assembly, political leaders from the CDU and SPD have warned that peaceful youth movements could be co-opted by left-wing extremists and criminals. In cities like Stuttgart, police are intensifying preparations to ensure public safety and protect the right to peaceful demonstration.
