France: Yellow Vest movement plans new protests

The Yellow Vest movement in France has announced a second wave of protests scheduled for Saturday, October 24. Protesters intend to march from the Bastille to the Opera in Paris, seeking a freeze on the prices of essential goods, fuel, and natural gas.

This mobilization follows recent demonstrations in Lyon regarding the rising cost of living. While organizers hope to avoid the widespread destruction seen in previous protests, labor unions have also announced a general strike for November 5. Sophie Binet, head of the CGT union, has called for student and university participation in the upcoming strike.

Investigations into the movement's resurgence highlight the role of social media, particularly TikTok. Reports indicate that several accounts using AI-generated imagery and the name ‘Yellow Vest Spokesperson’ have been promoting national mobilization. Analysts have noted that these accounts appeared or changed names simultaneously in early September, raising questions about coordinated or automated activity on the platform.
