France: Yellow Vest protests cause over 1.1 billion euros in damages

French government estimates indicate that damages resulting from the recent Yellow Vest protests in mid-October have exceeded 1.1 billion euros. According to the French Institute for Management and Public Policy Research, the total cost includes approximately 910 million euros in direct physical damage to shops and public property—including the Limoges town hall—and roughly 190 million euros in lost revenue due to business disruptions.

Reports specify that more than 2,500 stores were affected, with 1,161 sustaining severe damage from looting and arson. These recent events follow a history of unrest in France, including the original 2018 movement sparked by fuel tax increases and subsequent protests against President Emmanuel Macron’s economic policies.

Broader analysis of recent civil unrest in France, including 2023 pension reform protests and summer riots, highlights a pattern of economic and social tension. Previous incidents in 2023 saw damage to thousands of buildings and vehicles, with insurance claims reaching 793 million euros, driven by rising living costs and disputes over the distribution of economic reform burdens.
