France's 2026 forest fires devastate wildlife and spawn laser hoax

In July 2026 massive forest fires ripped through the Gironde department in southwestern France, scorching tens of thousands of hectares and prompting the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of residents. The blaze caused extensive loss of wildlife, killing birds, deer, hedgehogs and other small mammals, and destroying habitats that may take years to recover.

The ecological damage was highlighted by French Minister for Ecological Transformation Monique Barbut, who warned of catastrophic impacts on fauna by the end of summer.

Separately, a false claim circulated on Czech social‑media platforms asserting that high‑energy lasers had prevented blue objects, such as a PVC pool, from burning in the French fires. The hoax, echoing similar misinformation from the 2023 Maui wildfires, was debunked as baseless.
