France's Ameli Vitale Card Update Process and Emerging Fraud Scams
Updating a French Vitale health insurance card requires different documents depending on the life event. After marriage, the card is not updated automatically; the holder must upload either the marriage certificate or a copy of the family record to the Ameli account, then send the old card by mail. For a divorce, no supporting document is needed and the change can be made entirely online. When moving to a different department or changing from MSA to CPAM, a "mutation de caisse" is required, which demands a recent proof of address and may involve additional paperwork.
A separate fraud scheme exploits the same update process. Victims receive an SMS that mimics official Ameli branding, warning that their Vitale card will expire and urging an immediate click on a link. The link leads to a counterfeit website that looks identical to the genuine portal and collects personal data, including bank details. In some cases, the scammers open a credit line of up to €3,000 in the victim’s name without their consent. The scheme relies on urgency, visual similarity, and the use of deceptive sender addresses. Authorities advise checking the sender’s email domain, avoiding unsolicited links, and reporting any unauthorized credit applications.
