France's banks push biometric cards, phasing out PIN codes

French banks are rolling out biometric payment cards that replace the traditional four‑digit PIN with a fingerprint sensor built into the card. The technology, developed by Thales, enables unlimited‑amount transactions and is promoted as more secure because fingerprints are unique. BNP Paribas already offers the cards to Visa Premier customers, Crédit Agricole to Mastercard Gold and World Elite Debit users, and the BPCE group (Caisse d’Épargne, Banque Populaire) is also planning deployment.

Consumer reaction is mixed; some welcome the convenience and enhanced security, while others prefer the familiar PIN method. The rollout is part of a broader shift toward contactless and mobile payments in France, with merchants also exploring tap‑to‑pay and QR‑code solutions.

The move signals a strategic effort by French banks to modernise payment infrastructure and reduce fraud risk through biometric authentication.
