France’s broadband operators prioritize Wi‑Fi coverage over raw speed

Orange is expanding its FTTH network across France, deploying XGS‑PON and 50G‑PON technologies to boost downstream capacity up to 8 Gb/s for both residential and business customers. The rollout focuses on optimized topology, low‑loss connections and dynamic bandwidth allocation to improve the end‑user experience.

At the same time, French internet service providers are reshaping their product strategies. Operators such as Orange (Livebox Max), Free (Freebox Ultra), and Bouygues Telecom (Bbox Ultym) now emphasize indoor Wi‑Fi coverage, offering Wi‑Fi 7 routers and optional repeaters. The shift reflects real‑world usage patterns—typical households need only 150–200 Mb/s in peak conditions, while Wi‑Fi dead zones and latency affect streaming, video calls and gaming more than raw fibre speed. Consequently, the primary criteria for choosing a box have moved from advertised gigabit rates to reliable Wi‑Fi reach across all rooms.
