France's electric SUVs lose up to 40% range in winter while charging gaps persist in cities

Tests of electric 4×4 SUVs show that cold weather can cut WLTP‑rated range by 20‑40 %, with the loss varying widely between models. Vehicles equipped with an active battery‑thermal management system and a heat pump keep winter range penalties under 15 %, while those that heat the cabin with resistive elements suffer the greatest reductions.

A separate study of French municipalities evaluated how ready they are for electric‑car holidays. By combining the number and power of charging stations, parking availability and local policy support, the analysis ranked Marseille, Bordeaux, Rennes, Nantes and Toulon as the most suitable destinations. The report highlights that a high number of chargers alone does not guarantee a good experience; coherent infrastructure from departure to arrival is essential for EV drivers.

Together, the findings underscore the dual challenges for electric mobility in France: maintaining vehicle performance in low temperatures and improving the charging ecosystem across popular travel spots.
