Frances Haugen warns of AI social isolation risks

Frances Haugen, founder of the NGO Beyond the Screen and former Facebook employee, has warned that artificial intelligence poses a greater threat of social isolation than any previous technology. She specifically highlighted the risks associated with AI-based virtual companions designed for children.

In the United States, Meta has reached an agreement with approximately fifty states to resolve legal actions alleging the company designed addictive products that harm adolescent mental health. TikTok has also reached a similar settlement with Alabama.

In France, the Constitutional Council invalidated a previously passed law that sought to ban social media access for children under the age of 15, ruling that a total ban would constitute an excessive infringement on freedom of expression.
