France's Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez Calls for Heightened Security Ahead of Aug 15 Assumption
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez sent a telegram to prefects on 6 August urging “extreme vigilance” for the upcoming Assumption holiday on 15 August. He cited a high terrorist threat level and ongoing international tensions, calling for reinforced security measures at Christian places of worship and public gatherings.
Nuñez highlighted that 843 anti‑Christian incidents were recorded in 2025, a 9 % rise from 2024 and accounting for 34 % of all anti‑religious acts. In the first half of 2026, 458 such incidents were reported, up 6 % compared with the same period a year earlier. The minister’s directive aims to prevent further attacks and ensure public safety during the religious celebration.
