Macron Calls US‑Iran Deal Impulsive but Positive, Urges Regional Responsibility

French President Emmanuel Macron said the United States‑Iran agreement was a decision “made on impulse” but that it is heading in the right direction. He added he is not fully convinced that the war with Iran is over and noted that Tehran’s military capabilities are now severely limited, making regime‑change by bombing unfeasible.

Macron announced France’s willingness to work with the United Kingdom and about 40 other nations to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and to support alternative energy routes. He stressed the need to help Lebanon defeat Hezbollah and called on Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to act with “responsibility and rationality” in Lebanon, Gaza and the West Bank, warning that Israeli actions fuel hatred and violence.

The president also said France will pressure Russia to return to peace talks on Ukraine and affirmed that the G7 summit in Évian achieved a “moment of unity” on these issues.
