France's Natural Pools and Marne Lakes Draw Summer Swimmers

Across France, a series of natural swimming pools have become popular summer destinations. The gorges of the Méouge in the Hautes‑Alpes feature turquoise water and a medieval three‑arch bridge. In the Aude and Pyrénées‑Orientales, the Galamus canyon offers deep basins framed by 300‑metre cliffs, while the Verdouble near Peyrepertuse presents a succession of crystal‑clear rock‑carved pools. On Corsica, the Cavu river creates a network of deep cuvettes and waterfalls, and the Restonica valley in Haute‑Corse showcases granite‑lined basins with water temperatures between 15 °C and 18 °C.

In the Marne department, the artificial Lake Der‑Chantecoq, France’s largest lake, stretches nearly 10 km and provides six supervised sandy beaches, water‑sports facilities and a 36 km cycling path. The commune of Connantre operates a 1 750 m² biological pool filtered naturally by aquatic plants, attracting around 12 000 visitors in summer 2025. Reims and Châlons‑en‑Champagne also offer municipal and aquatic centres with multiple indoor and outdoor pools for families and athletes.
