France's potential NATO shift poses strategic risks

NATO is preparing for potential shifts in its alliance structure as the 2027 French presidential election approaches. Recent polling indicates that approximately half of French voters support political candidates who hold reservations about the country's relationship with the alliance.

Key figures include Marine Le Pen of the National Rally, who seeks to withdraw France from NATO's integrated command structure, and Jean-Luc Mélenchon of the far-left, who advocates for a complete exit from the alliance. Such a move would pose significant risks to Brussels, particularly as NATO manages a potential reduction in U.S. military presence in Europe amid heightened defense concerns regarding Russia.

France is a critical member of the alliance, serving as the only nuclear power within the European Union and maintaining substantial conventional military capabilities. Additionally, France contributes approximately 10% of NATO's annual operating budget, estimated at 5.3 billion euros. A NATO diplomat described the potential loss of France as ‘terrible,’ noting the danger of Paris withdrawing while American presence in Europe may be diminishing.
