France's Public Confidence Erodes as Survey Finds 84% See Loss of Societal Values
A poll carried out for Odoxa by Comfluence and L'Opinion surveyed a representative sample of 1,005 French adults in early June. The results show that 84 % of respondents believe the values, rules and institutions that traditionally anchor French society have weakened compared with twenty years ago. A substantial majority – 87 % – say respect, merit, the sense of effort and authority have declined over the same period.
The survey also reveals deep cynicism toward politics: 91 % say confidence in political parties and the political class has fallen, and 62 % doubt that the presidential and legislative elections scheduled for 2027 will restore stable political anchors. While older age groups are most pessimistic, almost half of those aged 18‑24 share the view that societal repères are disappearing. Respondents consider the restoration of work‑related values the top priority for rebuilding collective cohesion.
These findings come less than a year before the 2027 French presidential election, highlighting widespread public unease about the nation’s social fabric and institutional credibility.
