France's recognition of Palestine faces stagnation one year later

One year after France officially recognized the State of Palestine on September 22, 2025, the diplomatic momentum appears to have stalled. While the move was initially a significant initiative by President Emmanuel Macron during the United Nations General Assembly, the prospect of a two-state solution remains difficult due to ongoing Israeli opposition.

Analysts suggest that the French government's attempt to balance its recognition with efforts to appease Israel has prevented the creation of a constructive diplomatic cycle. Agnès Levallois, president of the Institute for Research and Studies on the Mediterranean and Middle East (iReMMO), noted that the recognition failed to implement the necessary conditions for a Palestinian state, ultimately hitting a wall of Israeli intransigence.

Despite upcoming elections in Israel on October 27, observers suggest that a change in leadership may not resolve the impasse, as the events of October 7 have significantly complicated the path toward a two-state solution. In November 2025, President Macron met with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas at the Élysée Palace.
