France's residential solar installations surge in unexpected regions
A study by Hello Watt based on data from 112,000 users shows that residential solar panel installations in France have accelerated beyond the traditionally sunny southern departments. Between July 2025 and July 2026, the Creuse department led the growth with a 0.82‑point increase in the equipment rate, followed by Ain (+0.71), Vosges (+0.68), Vaucluse (+0.59) and Meuse (+0.58). The national equipment rate rose from 5.41 % to 6 % of homes, a 10.9 % jump, bringing the total number of photovoltaic systems of 36 kWp or less to 1,242,435 as of 30 June 2026.
At the same time, battery storage is emerging as a crucial element of France’s green electricity mix. Solar and wind now generate about 27 % of the country’s power, and the photovoltaic capacity reached 33 GW by March 2026. Grid‑connected battery capacity stood at roughly 1.6 GW at the end of 2025, with more than 7 GW of projects in the pipeline and connection requests exceeding 14 GW. The largest installed site in the Marne region provides 240 MW of power and 480 MWh of storage, commissioned in late 2025, while targets aim for 4–6 GW of storage capacity by 2035.
