France’s residential solar market expands with PVGIS tool and DIY guidance

Residential solar electricity generation in France has been growing steadily, driven by supportive regulations, financial incentives and falling equipment costs. Homeowners are advised to assess roof orientation, tilt and shading to determine the economic viability of a photovoltaic installation, with south‑facing roofs at about 30° tilt offering the best yields.

The European Commission’s free online tool PVGIS, now a reference platform, lets users model expected solar output for any location by inputting orientation, tilt, system size and shading. It provides hourly, daily and annual production estimates as well as financial indicators such as return on investment and internal rate of return, helping both private owners and professionals size and evaluate self‑consumption projects, battery storage options and grid‑feed possibilities.
