Francesca Albanese urges Indonesia to evaluate economic ties to Gaza

UN Special Rapporteur for the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Francesca Albanese, has urged Indonesia to identify and sever all direct and indirect economic connections that may facilitate the genocide in Gaza.

Speaking at a discussion organized by Amnesty International Indonesia in Jakarta, Albanese stated that the best course of action for any nation is to ensure compliance with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) advisory opinion. She emphasized that states should not recognize the legal consequences of illegal actions, including the occupation of territories.

Albanese advised that trade, academic exchanges, research programs, and purchases that legitimize the occupation should be halted. She noted that if any involvement or complicity in supporting the occupation is discovered, those relationships must be terminated. However, she acknowledged that dismantling a system profiting from genocide cannot be achieved by a single country or through a single policy alone.
