Francesca Ercolini investigation shifts to homicide after second autopsy

A second autopsy has reopened the investigation into the death of Francesca Ercolini, a 51-year-old judge found dead in her Pesaro home on December 26, 2022. While the initial investigation suggested suicide by hanging with a scarf, new forensic findings have shifted the focus toward homicide.

Forensic pathologist Vittorio Fineschi, following the exhumation of the body, identified a neck fracture that may be more consistent with strangulation than hanging. Investigators also noted a deep, distinct mark on the neck that appears more compatible with a cord or cable than a scarf, along with bruising that could indicate a physical struggle.

Additional evidence includes a statement from the couple's son, who referred to a ‘cordino’ (small cord) during the initial emergency call. The husband, lawyer Lorenzo Ruggeri, and a police officer friend are currently under investigation as authorities work to clarify the circumstances of the death.
