Francesco Totti claims key role in Italy’s 2006 World Cup success

Italian football legend Francesco Totti has asserted that Italy’s victory in the 2006 World Cup would not have been possible without his presence on the pitch. Reflecting on the tournament ahead of his 50th birthday, Totti noted that despite playing at only 40 percent physical capacity due to a severe ankle fracture sustained in February 2006, he remained a decisive factor for coach Marcello Lippi.

During the tournament in Germany, Totti started six of Italy’s seven matches, recording one goal and four assists. He emphasized that the World Cup title elevated his status from a local icon at AS Roma to an international football legend, providing a level of global recognition that domestic trophies alone could not achieve.

Totti also addressed past criticisms regarding his leadership style in the locker room, stating that he preferred to lead through on-field performance rather than vocal instruction, believing that actions on the pitch are what truly matter.
