Franche-Comté and Lorraine report rising sports participation
Data from the National Institute of Youth and Popular Education (INJEP) reveals a significant rise in sports participation across the French regions of Franche-Comté and Lorraine.
In Franche-Comté, sports licenses issued by federations reached over 283,000 in 2023, representing 240 licenses per 1,000 inhabitants. This marks a 6.4% increase from 2022, a trend largely attributed to growth among women and children under 14. Football remains the most popular sport in the region, followed by handball and equestrianism.
In Lorraine, the region saw an even higher growth rate of 9.7% between 2022 and 2023, with more than 548,000 licenses issued. This equates to 236 licenses per 1,000 inhabitants. Similar to Franche-Comté, football is the leading sport in Lorraine, followed by tennis and equestrianism.
