Franchise owners adopt new strategies to manage operations and labor challenges

Franchise owners are utilizing various strategies to manage operational challenges, including staff turnover, aging equipment, and the risks of becoming a business bottleneck. In Southern Maryland, specifically within Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s counties, owners are encouraged to review franchise agreements annually, maintain strong communication with franchisors, and establish dedicated repair funds for equipment and remodels.

To improve scalability and reduce stress, some owners are implementing a “two-week test” to identify operational gaps. This involves simulating a 14-day absence to determine which tasks require the owner’s direct involvement and which can be delegated to staff or automated. This approach addresses the issue of owners becoming bottlenecks in their own businesses.

Labor market pressures remain a factor; data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, cited by the National Restaurant Association, indicated that 503,000 workers left the restaurant and lodging sector in July. To combat these challenges, some owners are turning to franchise coaching and peer support programs to refine processes and improve management structures.
