Francis Duru discusses Yoruba dominance in Nollywood

Veteran Nollywood actor Francis Duru has attributed the current dominance of Yoruba filmmakers in the Nigerian film industry to superior organization and mutual support. Speaking during an interview on the Yan Content Factory YouTube channel, Duru noted that while Igbo producers were instrumental in birthing the modern Nollywood era by introducing home videos in the 1990s and early 2000s, they have struggled to maintain that influence.

Duru criticized what he described as an “individualistic mentality” among Igbos, suggesting that a self-centered approach has prevented them from effectively projecting their heritage. He contrasted this with the Yoruba community, stating they “protect and project their own.” He further observed that while Yoruba stories are prevalent, Igbo heritage is notably absent from major streaming platforms like Netflix.
