Francis Ford Coppola used real horse head in The Godfather scene
During the filming of the iconic trilogy The Godfather, director Francis Ford Coppola used a real horse head for a pivotal scene instead of a prop. Actor John Marley, who was deceived during the process, had previously rehearsed the scene using a rubber prop.
To achieve greater realism, Coppola's team obtained a horse head from a New Jersey pet food factory that had already been slaughtered for meat. The real head was swapped for the prop while Marley was waiting for the cameras to roll. The screams of horror heard in the film were the genuine reactions of the actor in shock upon touching the carcass.
While animal rights organizations such as PETA reacted strongly to the revelation, Coppola stated that no living creature was harmed, as the production utilized remains already discarded by the meat industry.
