Francisco Fontán Pardo becomes EU Ambassador to Mozambique

Spanish diplomat Francisco Fontán Pardo has assumed leadership of the European Union (EU) Delegation in Mozambique. He succeeds Italian Ambassador Antonino Maggiore, who completed a four-year term.

Fontán Pardo was appointed by Kaja Kallas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. The new ambassador brings extensive experience from the European External Action Service, having previously served as the Deputy Head of the EU Delegation in Brazil, Chief of Staff to the former High Representative, and EU Ambassador to ASEAN.

Upon his arrival, Fontán Pardo expressed his intention to work closely with Mozambican authorities, civil society, the private sector, and international partners. He emphasized that consolidating the bilateral partnership is a priority, with a focus on sustainable development, stability, peace consolidation, and shared prosperity. He is expected to formally present his credentials to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation in the coming days.
