Francisco Garduño Yáñez hearing postponed in Ciudad Juárez migrant fire case
A federal hearing in Ciudad Juárez regarding the criminal process of former National Institute of Migration (INM) commissioner Francisco Garduño Yáñez was postponed on Tuesday. The hearing was intended to determine if Garduño had fulfilled the conditions required for the conditional suspension of his case related to the March 27, 2023, fire at a migrant detention center.
The 2023 tragedy resulted in the deaths of 40 migrants and left 27 others injured. Garduño, who is currently a director at the Secretariat of Public Education (SEP), faces charges of illicit exercise of public service due to alleged omissions in supervising facility safety.
The postponement occurred after Garduño requested to appear via digital means, a request denied by the judge, who ruled that he must attend future proceedings in person. The hearing will also address the fulfillment of requirements for economic compensation and damage reparation for the victims' families. Meanwhile, approximately fifty family members and human rights defenders held a protest outside the Federal Judicial Power facilities in Ciudad Juárez to demand justice.
