Francisco Gomes calls for immigration control in Madeira

Francisco Gomes, a deputy for the CHEGA party, has called for stricter immigration controls in Madeira. During a visit to Caniço, Gomes accused the regional government, led by Miguel Albuquerque, of maintaining an open-door policy to provide cheap labor for the hospitality, restaurant, and construction sectors.

Gomes highlighted a specific housing situation in Caniço where a commercial space was allegedly converted without authorization into a dormitory for approximately a dozen foreign workers. He reported claims of illegal construction, misuse of condominium water, and the unauthorized transformation of common garden areas into vegetable plots. The deputy urged competent authorities to investigate these allegations, citing potential risks to security, housing, public services, and local cultural identity.
