Dominican Republic political landscape shifts ahead of 2028 elections

Political activity in the Dominican Republic is intensifying ahead of the 2028 elections, marked by internal friction within the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) and strategic positioning by opposition groups.

Within the PLD, candidates are facing internal disputes regarding the party's communication strategies and the upcoming October primary. Figures such as Francisco Javier García have criticized the party's failure to promote candidate debates, while others, including Abel Martínez and Gonzalo Castillo, have reportedly expressed reservations about participating in the scheduled internal consultation. Meanwhile, the party is working to reorganize through provincial assemblies to strengthen its structure.

Opposition leaders are also making moves. Omar Fernández of the Fuerza del Pueblo (FP) expressed confidence that his party will win in 2028, regardless of potential alliances.
