Francisco Martín resigns as Government Delegate in Madrid

Francisco Martín has resigned from his position as the Government Delegate in Madrid, a role he has held since March 2023. His departure follows his exclusion from the PSOE electoral lists for the upcoming general elections on November 29.

Martín’s tenure was marked by significant institutional friction with the regional government led by Isabel Díaz Ayuso and the Madrid City Council headed by José Luis Martínez-Almeida. His recent months were particularly contentious due to his management of the Puerta del Sol protest camp and disagreements with police unions regarding his stance on police interventions during educational demonstrations.

Internal party dynamics also played a role; Martín had previously supported Enma López during the municipal primaries, a move that signaled friction with the current party leadership. The Spanish government is expected to name a successor, with current sub-delegate Pilar Trinidad Núñez identified as a leading candidate.
