Francisco “Maukura” announces presidential candidacy in Timor-Leste

Francisco Dionísio F. “Maukura”, a veteran of the Timorese resistance, has announced his intention to run in the 2027 presidential elections in Timor-Leste. The 53-year-old candidate stated his goal is to promote national development and ensure strict adherence to the Constitution.

During his announcement in Dili, “Maukura” emphasized that the President should serve as a unifying figure and a guardian of the Constitution, supporting the government in its duties while remaining loyal to the people. He advocated for a governance model based on technocracy, meritocracy, and budgetary transparency to ensure that the benefits of international integration are shared broadly across the nation.

He joins other notable figures, including Ambassador Joaquim da Fonseca and former Prime Minister Rui Araújo, who have also expressed intentions to contest the upcoming elections. The new President is scheduled to take office on May 20, 2027, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the restoration of Timor-Leste's independence.
