Francisco Morazán remains relocated to new San Salvador mausoleum
Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele presided over a solemn ceremony to relocate the remains of Francisco Morazán, the Honduran statesman and former president of the Federal Republic of Central America, to a newly constructed mausoleum. The new resting place is located within the Jardín Centroamérica, adjacent to the National Palace in the Historic Center of San Salvador.
Morazán, who was executed in Costa Rica in 1842, had requested to be buried in El Salvador due to the country's historical support for his unionist vision. His remains had resided in the Los Ilustres Cemetery for several decades. The relocation ceremony included military honors and a formal procession.
The new mausoleum was scheduled to open to the public with free admission on the evening of September 24. The event has drawn significant attention from Honduras, with regional figures expressing gratitude for the recognition of Morazán’s historical legacy and his role in Central American integration.
