Carlos Tomás Morel Diplán becomes Archbishop of Santo Domingo

Monsignor Carlos Tomás Morel Diplán has officially assumed leadership of the Archdiocese of Santo Domingo and the position of Military Ordinary of the Dominican Republic. This transition follows Pope Leo XIV’s acceptance of the resignation of Monsignor Francisco Ozoria Acosta, who stepped down upon reaching the canonical age limit of 75.

Morel Diplán, who previously served as coadjutor archbishop with right of succession since October 2025, formally takes over the pastoral government and the role of Primate of America. His appointment also includes responsibility for the pastoral care of the Dominican Armed Forces through the Military Ordinariate.

Francisco Ozoria Acosta transitions to the role of archbishop emeritus. While he will no longer hold administrative or leadership responsibilities, he may continue to participate in religious activities such as retreats and conferences. The transition follows a period of administrative shifts that began in late 2025 when Morel Diplán was granted specific oversight of certain ecclesiastical functions.
