Francisco ‘Pinula’ Contreras, Comunicaciones legend, dies at 91
Guatemalan football is mourning the death of Francisco López Contreras, known as ‘Pinula’ Contreras, a legendary player for Comunicaciones FC and the Guatemala national team. He passed away on Sunday, September 13, at the age of 91.
Contreras played 14 seasons for Comunicaciones, winning four league titles, one National Cup, and four Campeón de Campeones trophies. He is most famously remembered for scoring the goal that secured Comunicaciones’ first league championship in 1956 against Municipal. He also played a decisive role in securing another title in 1958 against Xelajú.
His career included notable international experiences, such as playing against Santos of Brazil, which featured Pelé, in 1959, and participating in an exhibition match against Real Madrid in 1960. He also competed in the inaugural Concacaf Champions' Cup, scoring against Águila of El Salvador.
