Franciszek Smuda: Remembering the legendary Polish football coach

The Polish sporting community marks the second anniversary of the death of Franciszek Smuda, a prominent football player and coach who passed away on August 18, 2022, at the age of 76 after battling blood cancer.

Smuda is remembered for his significant impact on Polish football, most notably as the head coach of the Poland national team from 2009 to 2012 during the Euro 2012 tournament. His club career was marked by major domestic successes, including two Polish championship titles with Widzew Łódź (1996, 1997) and one with Wisła Kraków (1999). He also led Widzew Łódź to the Champions League group stage.

As a player, Smuda competed in Poland, Germany, and the United States. His time in the U.S. in 1975, where he worked in a refinery while playing football, is noted as a period that helped shape his resilient and uncompromising character. Throughout his coaching career, he managed several top Ekstraklasa clubs, including Legia Warsaw and Lech Poznań.
