Franco Baresi funeral and worldwide tributes as Milan mourns legend

Former AC Milan captain Franco Baresi died on 31 July at age 66 after a prolonged illness. His funeral is scheduled for 4 August at the Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio in Milan, where thousands of fans and football figures are expected to gather. The club will not be present in person because the first‑team squad is on a pre‑season tour in Australia, but AC Milan’s president Gerry Cardinale, other executives and staff will attend. Former teammates, coaches and football personalities – including Fabio Capello, Arrigo Sacchi, George Weah, Cesc Fàbregas and many others – have issued public tributes. During the Australian tour, Milan’s staff visited a mural of Baresi in Perth and laid a wreath. The club is also considering permanent honors such as naming its training centre or the Curva Sud at San Siro after Baresi.
