Franco Colapinto addresses online abuse in Formula 1
Formula 1 driver Franco Colapinto has called for greater awareness and responsibility regarding the rise of online abuse within the sport. While the growth of F1 on social media has increased its popularity, it has also led to a significant increase in hate speech and harassment directed at drivers and staff.
Colapinto noted that the issue is a reflection of modern society and suggested that athletes must use their voices to set boundaries. He emphasized that drivers should help fans understand the real-world impact of their words, noting that many people post aggressive comments under the assumption that athletes do not read them or are unaffected.
In a moment of self-reflection, the Alpine driver also acknowledged that drivers share some responsibility. He stated that athletes sometimes contribute to tensions by making impulsive or unreflective comments during post-race media interviews, which can fuel further online hostility.
