George Russell wins the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku

George Russell won the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix at the Baku City Circuit, securing his third victory of the season. Starting from pole position, the Mercedes driver held off a late charge from Max Verstappen, who finished second by just 0.196 seconds. Isack Hadjar completed the podium in third for Red Bull.

The race was marked by significant chaos and multiple retirements. Following a safety car period, Franco Colapinto caused a major collision at Turn 1. The Alpine driver locked his brakes and struck teammate Pierre Gasly, which subsequently involved Lando Norris of McLaren, forcing all three drivers to retire. As a result of the incident, the FIA penalized Colapinto with a five-place grid penalty for the upcoming race in Malaysia.

In the championship standings, leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli finished fifth after recovering from 16th on the grid, maintaining a 66-point lead over Russell. Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton finished fourth and sixth, respectively, for Ferrari.
