Francois Ozon adapts Albert Camus’ ‘The Stranger’

French director Francois Ozon has released a new film adaptation of Albert Camus’ classic novel, ‘The Stranger’ (Den fremmede). Set in 1938 French colonial Algeria, the film explores the profound social, economic, and sexual divides between French settlers and the local population.

The story follows Meursault, portrayed by Benjamin Voisin, a young man characterized by a sense of detachment and emotional emptiness. The narrative traces the events leading to his crime, beginning with his indifferent reaction to his mother’s death and continuing through his hollow personal relationships. The film uses this character study to examine themes of latent xenophobia and the tensions inherent in the colonial setting.

Ozon’s work has previously received critical acclaim, and this adaptation has earned three Lumiere Awards in the categories of Best Film, Best Actor, and Best Cinematography.
