Franja en Moviment demands more Catalan language hours in schools

The association Franja en Moviment is calling for increased hours of Catalan language instruction in schools and institutes throughout the Franja de Ponent region. This demand was highlighted during an event commemorating the 40th anniversary of the agreement that first allowed Catalan language teaching in the area.

Organizers noted that while Catalan is currently a voluntary subject, between 90% and 95% of families choose to enroll their children. They expressed dissatisfaction that the subject is limited to two hours per week, whereas other languages like French receive three. The group is advocating for the ability to teach other subjects, such as mathematics, social sciences, and history, in Catalan.

Approximately 70% of families reportedly wish to see other subjects taught in the language. Despite the high demand, organizers stated that the current educational model continues to face significant shortcomings in its implementation.
