Steinmeier calls for fair trade and global rules during China visit

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier delivered a keynote speech at Peking University during a state visit to China, addressing economic imbalances and the need for a rules-based international order. Steinmeier emphasized that while Germany and Europe do not seek economic decoupling from China, they require fairer competition. He noted that European companies often face restricted market access in China, while state-subsidized Chinese products enter European markets in large volumes.

The President warned that China’s pursuit of economic independence should not result in increased dependency or vulnerability for European nations. He also called for international guardrails for artificial intelligence to ensure technology remains manageable by humans.

On the geopolitical front, Steinmeier urged China to leverage its influence on Russia to help end the war in Ukraine. During the visit, Peking University also awarded him an honorary professorship.
